Coffee Ratio Calculator
Coffee-to-water ratio by weight is the single biggest lever on strength — dial it in exactly, both directions.
Water amount → coffee needed

The "golden ratio" is a range, not one fixed number
The Specialty Coffee Association's commonly cited golden ratio range is 1:15 to 1:18 (grams coffee : grams water), with 1:16 or 1:17 often used as a solid middle default — a lower number (like 1:15) makes a stronger brew, a higher number (like 1:18) makes it lighter. Personal taste, roast level, and brew method all shift where in that range you'll actually land.
Weight, not scoops, is what actually keeps a ratio consistent
A "scoop" of coffee varies with grind size and how packed it is, the same way a cup of flour varies with how it's measured — weighing both coffee and water is the only way to reliably repeat a specific ratio and get a consistent result cup after cup.
Brew method shifts the sweet spot within the range
Pour-over and drip methods commonly land around 1:16–1:17; French press, which has more contact time and no paper filter to catch fines, often uses a slightly stronger ratio closer to 1:15; espresso uses an entirely different, much more concentrated ratio not covered by this calculator. Start in the middle of the range for your method and adjust from there to taste.
